Day to Remember –
A tragic auto accident leaves Mary Judith (MJ) Burak in a
comatose state and her infant daughter dead. With his life in turmoil, husband
Frank is further shocked to discover she was pregnant before the accident. The
newborn is healthy but delivered while MJ is unconscious. Frank doesn’t give up
hope and supports his wife during a lengthy and miraculous recovery to regain
consciousness. Still grieving the loss of his mother several years ago, however,
he is worried about how the death of their first child will impact MJ. When she
makes her medical comeback but doesn’t remember the accident, Frank forbids
mention of the first child’s death. He arranges a witness protection type move
to a community where no one will find them hoping this will protect her from
going into grief about the accident.
His plot to spare MJ includes deceiving her into believing the
second child is the first. Everything goes according to plan until depression
and anxiety begin to crash down upon her, ripping their new lives apart. The
amnesia fog begins to slowly lift as her buried grief digs its way out through
her soul and finally breaks her wide open. Therapy is necessary for her to
continue functioning, but that therapy also begins to awaken her to the previous
tragedy. MJ reaches out in unconventional ways to search that which she desires
from within; the knowledge that she has lost a child.
Meanwhile, Frank becomes upset with the therapist’s efforts
since he realizes his deception with MJ may soon be revealed. After confronting
Frank, the therapist disappears during a diving vacation that Frank helped set
up for him in the Caribbean. Frank is an expert diver and especially attracted
to exotic fish. His office aquarium is a vibrant display of tropicals including
his prized blowfish. The thing about Blowfish - they emit a substance that can
induce coma.
When MJ begins to digress and long for her therapist, Frank
attempts to distract her by encouraging her to redecorate the home. Frank has
been careful to remove all traces of the past, but MJ finds a hidden compartment
in an old jewelry box in the attic which contains letters from what appears to
be a former lover. The letters are dated just days before her wedding – she
looks up her anniversary date - which sets her off on a search to find her
previous love life. Her investigation uncovers that her former lover died in a
car crash.
Few forces in life are more powerful than motherhood. Combine
deceiving that force with suppressed grief and it can have disastrous effects.
MJ finds out more truth about death than she ever wanted to
know, including what really happened the day her daughter died. A Day to
Remember deals with the importance of the grieving process, society’s stigma
regarding grief and recognizes that everyone grieves differently.
