The View I Almost Missed Because I Was Rushing

Letters from the Journey — Entry Five

I was focused on the destination that day.

The trail was familiar, the weather was clear, and I had a rough idea of how long the hike would take. I kept checking my watch, measuring progress by distance instead of presence. I told myself I’d slow down once I reached the lookout.

But halfway up, something caught my eye.

A break in the trees.
A shift in the light.
A quiet opening I would have walked past if I’d kept my pace.

I stopped without really thinking about it.

The view wasn’t dramatic in the way summits usually are. No sweeping panorama. No wide horizon. Just layers of hills fading into each other, softened by haze, with light resting gently on the edges. It felt unfinished — like something meant to be noticed, not announced.

I stood there longer than I expected.

And it struck me how close I came to missing it entirely.

I realized how often I do this in life.
How often I rush toward what I’ve decided matters, while God is already present in the place I’m standing.
How often I assume meaning waits at the end, when it’s quietly unfolding along the way.

I think we confuse movement with progress.
We mistake speed for purpose.
We convince ourselves that if we’re not advancing, we’re falling behind.

But God doesn’t meet us only at the finish line.
He meets us in the pauses.
In the moments we didn’t plan for.
In the places we weren’t trying to get to.

That overlook didn’t change my route.
It changed my awareness.

It reminded me that presence is not a delay — it’s an invitation.
That slowing down doesn’t mean you’ve lost direction.
It often means you’re finally paying attention.

By the time I reached the summit, I wasn’t thinking about the view anymore.
I’d already been given what I needed.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t the ones we chase.
They’re the ones God places in our path — waiting for us to notice.
