What the River Taught Me About Letting Go

Letters from the Journey — Entry Two
I reached the river early—before the sun had fully broken over the ridge.
The water was cold and fast, carrying sticks and leaves that had fallen during the night.
I sat down on a smooth rock near the edge and watched the current move with a pace that made everything else in my mind slow down.
There’s something honest about a river.
It doesn’t pretend to hold what isn’t meant to stay.
It doesn’t cling to the stones, or the branches, or the fragments of yesterday drifting through it.
It receives… and then it releases.
Over and over again.
I didn’t realize how tightly I’d been holding things until I watched the water let everything pass freely.
A leaf lands in the current, and the river doesn’t argue.
It doesn’t grip.
It doesn’t worry about where the leaf will end up.
It simply carries it as far as it is meant to go, and then lets it drift beyond sight.
I wish letting go felt that natural for us.
But the truth is, we grip what is familiar—even when it hurts.
We hold on to old stories, old expectations, old versions of ourselves, long after God has whispered that it’s time to release them.
As I watched the river move, I felt a tightening in my chest unwind a little.
Because the current didn’t just teach me something about surrender—
it reminded me of something about God.
Letting go doesn’t mean losing control.
It means trusting the One who already holds the current.
Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting what happened.
It means trusting that God can carry you beyond it.
Letting go doesn’t mean giving up.
It means giving God room to move.
The river kept pulling each piece forward—never backward.
And isn’t that what God does with us?
He keeps us moving toward what’s next, even when we’re afraid to release what’s behind.
I picked up a small, smooth stone from the riverbed and rolled it in my hand.
It had been shaped by years of surrender—years of being carried, tumbled, softened, refined.
Not by force, but by flow.
And I wondered how much of my life God has been trying to shape the same way.
Not through pressure.
Through surrender.
Through trust.
Through releasing the things I was never meant to grip so tightly.
Before I stood to leave, I watched one last leaf drift slowly past my feet.
It caught the light in just the right way—like a small reminder that letting go doesn’t end a story.
It simply moves it forward.
And maybe that’s the lesson the river was teaching me all along:
You don’t lose what you release to God.
You just free your hands to receive what comes next.
